Your baby was Born to Learn!

Did you know?

  • As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher!
  • You help shape your child's future through the kinds of experiences you provide.
  • Your child's brain grows more rapidly in the first three years of life than at any other time.

Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a free parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten, usually age 5.  The goal of the program is to help parents give their child the best possible start in life.  By understanding what to expect during each stage of development, parents can easily capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child's language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills.

As a PAT (Parents As Teachers) family, you receive:

Personal Visits:  During a personal visit, a parent educator shares information on child development, brings an age-appropriate activity for you and your child to do together, addresses any parenting concerns, and together helps you observe your child. Usually visits are conducted at your home, making it convenient and safe for small children. However visits may be at the Parents as Teachers room or another place of your choosing. Visits last about an hour.

Parent group meetings: Group meetings are opportunities to share information about parenting issues and child development.  Parents learn and support each other, observe their children with other children and practice parenting skills.  Group meetings also provide children with opportunities to become comfortable, practice social skills and participate in activities in the school setting before they enter preschool/kindergarten.

Screenings: Screenings assess your child's overall development as well as health, hearing, vision and speech.  Early detection of potential problems helps prevent later difficulties in school.

Resource network: PAT helps link your family to other community services.

Parents as Teachers is here to help you.
