Process

Step 1:

You will be working in a small group with members from your competitor marketing teams to become an expert in one particular role. You will have the opportunity to "pick the brains" of your competitors, see what they have in mind, and brainstorm along with them regarding your role.

Browse each of the links below to explore the available positions. Discuss these positions with your marketing team and decide which role fits you best. Remember, each of the roles is interdependent. Everyone will have to do their part in order to make a winning chocolate package, and get a winning project grade!

Platonic Solid Professional

Geometry Engineer

Isometric Artist

Polyhedral Naturalist

You will have two days to become an expert in your particular role. Learn everything you can as you browse the links for this role. Take notes as you brainstorm with your expert team of competitors. Eventually, you will return to your original marketing team to share your expertise in the role you were assigned. What is the best method for you to teach the other members of your marketing team your role? How do you plan to "teach" them everything you know about your role? Your marketing team is depending on you!

You will be limited to 10 minutes or less to teach the other members of your marketing group everything they will need to know about your specific role and how your role fits in with their individual pieces to accomplish the task at hand. Be sure to read over the Individual Role presentation rubric so you understand exactly how your grade will be determined.

Step 2:

Return to your original marketing team. You are responsible for sharing your notes and all of the information you gathered during your expert group work. This is your opportunity to "teach" the other members of your team everything they need to know about your piece of the puzzle. Be creative in your presentation! Give everyone an opportunity to share their piece as you meet to begin the actual development of your final product. You will be evaluated by your peers on your ability to teach them the important information you have gathered from your role using the individual role presentation rubric.

Your team needs to work cooperatively to fit all of your individual pieces together and design the perfect chocolate package. Think about how each member can best contribute to the overall design. What does your piece of the puzzle represent? What did you gain from all of the research you did in your role? How can you best contribute to the webquest for the good of the group?

Step 3:

Your marketing team needs to make a prototype (model) of your candy package. The package needs to be sturdy and free standing. It needs to fold precisely from the net pattern to the geometric solid.

Your team needs to decide what image it wants your package to project. What will your container look like? Your candy package must be eye-catching. You want the consumer to stop and take a look. You know they will realize how much they are craving Charlie's Chocolate and your package will be a success.

Step 4:

You need to collect and record accurate measurement data that will allow you to determine the volume and surface area of your container. These measurements need to be both in standard and metric form. Remember, Charlie markets worldwide; both the US (standard), and the world community (metric) will want to use your package for their chocolate candy.

You need to record all measurements of length, depth, and height. You will eventually use this information to make an excel spreadsheet or data table of your results. The excel program will help you determine the containers surface area and volume, and will allow you to make comparisons of each of the containers.

Step 5:

Your team needs to make an isometric drawing to use in a multi-media presentation that will show how the candy will be packaged inside of the container. Your isometric drawing might show how the containers will be put inside larger boxes for transport. Finally, your isometric drawing might show how the boxes will be put inside of semi- trucks for transport across country. Include a net that numerically represents your packages.

Step 6:

Finally, your group needs to prepare a marketing multi-media presentation. This presentation needs to be creative. Discuss all of the possibilities for a marketing presentation with your teammates. Let your creative juices flow! Brainstorm all of the possibilities and decide what presentation will fit your design best.

Should you prepare a new ad campaign?
Would a commercial be the best way to market Charlie's candy?
Will you write a theme song people will associate with your product? Consider: costumes, stage background...
Should you consider marketing strategies involving promotions?
Can the company advertise by doing good deeds in the community? Scholarships...?

The presentation must persuade Charlie to choose your teams' container. Our class will watch your presentation and vote on the best container design and most creative presentation. Be sure that your presentation shows all of the hard work and effort you have put into this project including all of the knowledge you have gained.
