Second Grade has homework sent home on Monday thru Thursday or whatever is the next to last day of the week and is to be brought home on the next day. If they don't bring it back they have to stay in at recess to complete it. It takes at the most 10 minutes to do them.
We have been working on vowels sounds and sounding out of words. They should know how to pick words apart so they can figure them out. We have worked with both long and short sounds.
I am still needing some helpers for the classroom parties. I need one more helper for Halloween, two for Christmas, and two for Valentines. The way that this usually works is the three parents get together and plan the party. When they come together the day of the party they are in charge of the refreshments and the games. If you need me to do something, let me know. |

On September 4th, the 5th graders piled onto a school bus and traveled to Lamoni, Iowa. Why? It was Lamoni’s 5th Annual Civil War Days. Students were very excited to see men and women dressed in clothing from that era. Soldiers were there to spend the weekend and participate in a Civil War reenactment battle. People also came to show their crafts. The students were free to wander around to different areas and listen as the reenactors shared their stories. Afterwards, I asked the class what they liked best. Here were some of their comments:
“I thought watching them fire off the cannon was awesome!”
“The tinsmith made really cool candle-holders. I liked watching him.”
“The Federal officer showed us all the things he had in his tent. It was interesting.”
“Civil War Days was Cool! I’m anxious to learn more about the Civil War. I'm going back on Saturday to watch the battle." |

Next time you are in the high school check out the industrial revolution timelines made by the sophomore American History II class. The timelines cover 1865-1920 and show a number of technological advances that came into existence during this era.
Although the industrieal revolution first began in Great Britain, America was particularly suited to pick up that ball and run with it, so to speak, because of a number of significant factors. First, America had an abundance of natural resources, such as water, timber, iron ore, copper, good soil, and petroleum, that were used to manufacture goods. Second, a large work force, contributed by large families and large numbers of European and Asian immigrants coming to the country at the time. The third factor, the abundance of capital from both other countries and within this country, was provided by financial investors hoping to make lots of money in return. Finally, America's free-market system, with its emphasis on the profit motive, encouraged many entrepreneurs to start new businesses.
The class worked hard on their projects and were amazed by some of the facts they learned about products from crayons to dynamite to Dr. Pepper! We hope you get a chance to come take a look. |
